The trial plot

A garden built for plants the catalogs skip

The Rare Harvest began as a small trial plot in everyday garden soil, set aside for uncommon vegetables, flowers, and herbs that rarely appear in standard nursery catalogs. Each variety is sown, tended, and recorded from seed to harvest.

The aim is simple: show what these plants actually need, where they succeed, and where they struggle, so that trying something unfamiliar feels approachable rather than risky.

How we test

Three tenets behind every trial

Every variety in the trial plot is judged against the same three questions before it earns a place in the archive.

Tenet one

Regional adaptability

We record how each plant performs in everyday soil and seasonal conditions, noting where it thrives and where it needs extra care or a different site.

Tenet two

Honest failure notes

Failed sowings, slow germination, and disappointing harvests are documented as carefully as successes, so readers know what to expect.

Tenet three

Seed viability

We track germination rates and seed saving over successive seasons, favoring heritage lines that can be grown and passed on.

Start with a plant you have never grown.
